Utah Political Memes

Today has been a big day for Utah politics, no matter which way you lean, if you lean at all. The State Delegates decided to oust Sen. Bob Bennett from office, and sent Tim Bridgewater and Mike Lee into a primary to take place on June 22nd. But of course, if you're reading this you most likely know the convention results. What I want to address are a couple of political memes that I've been seeing crop up in most discussions about politics here in Utah.

The first is that we now have two Senators who are very senior (Bennett being a ranking member of the Appropriations committee) and are the ones who seemingly get things done. Here's how it brakes down. 1) These days, if you've been in the senate for three terms, all you care about is your job and your power. The more you can do to keep your power, the better. This is Bennett. I can concede that Bennett feels like he may be doing what is in the best interest of all us Utahns, but plain and simple Senator Bennett wants to keep what he feels is his. 2) If you've been in power as long as Bennett, you're a Statist. You feel like the government is meant to solve all of our problems. 3) You don't need to do what the party tells you for years and years until you get into a ranking committee position to do any good. That's just the system that both parties want to work under in order to gain control. As we've seen in many instances in our country, it only takes one or two Representatives or Senators to buck the system and throw a wrench in the works. Conclusion: We need someone who can throw a wrench in the works and work to protect individual and private sector rights. I don't see why we need so many government regulations. That is something that will naturally favor one above another.

The second meme is one totally native to Utah. We have a caucus system where the voters of each party select delegates who go to a convention to nominate a candidate for each race that year. Here is the meme that is cropping up this year. It is that the caucus system is totally defunct and does not represent the average Utah voter. I've seen it written that some think the system is illegal simply because there is no absentee balloting available to those who don't come to caucus meetings. Most people say that the delegates tend to be the extreme wing of whatever party they are with. My answer:1) If you're so bent out of shape about who becomes a delegate, make it a priority to show up to help select your delegate, the same as you would do to go to early balloting, obtaining an absentee ballot or just showing up at the polls. It's like complaining about who got elected president when you didn't make it a priority to go and vote. 2) We didn't have absentee balloting until a couple of decades ago at best.

The third ties into the forgoing meme. That is that this is a democratic government. That is not how the framers of the constitution envisioned things. They new that in many instances before them, when government was a total democracy, it was total mob rule. Mob Rule. Mobs are how memes create themselves. Mobs don't care about the individual. This is what the founders knew. So they set up the best system they knew how. That was to create a way for the people to select representatives. These representatives can then dedicate all their time working on one thing, representing their constituency. A lot of times a representative can see a clearer picture than the average voter because they can dedicate more time to study it, and get accurate information(it clearly doesn't work as well as now as it did when instituted). This way we get less stupid decisions then we would get with a pure democracy. I can tie this in with the first meme by saying that a true representative would not desire to turn this duty into a career. Career Statists loose touch with their constituency and the problems unique to them.

These memes are created by the group think of so many people who have no clear understanding of the origin of government and it the true need for it. These things are said only because they seem true at first blush, without critical thinking or research. Please feel free to leave nasty comments. I want to create as enlightening a discussion as I can on the few subjects in this post.
